This word comes to English via Italian and Spanish from Old French 'gale', meaning ‘rejoicing.’ This word meaning "a social occasion with special entertainments or performances", is not to be confused with 'galla', an Ethiopian people and language, nor 'galah', a small Australian cockatoo with a gray back and rosy pink head and underparts, which is abundant and regarded as a pest.
