Are rappers really poets‽ Although 'rhasodes' a word from the Greek 'rhapsōidia', which in turn comes from 'rhaptein' meaning ‘to stitch’ and 'ōidē' meaning ‘song’ are singing poets,'rap' comes from Middle English, originally meaning ‘severe blow with a weapon’, which is probably onomatopoetic of the Swedish 'rappa' which means ‘beat'.
