For a long time, prisons were meant to punish criminals, having them do pointless tasks, and living in terrible conditions. In Pennsylvania, the Quakers made a new kind of prison. The walls were built one and a half feet thick so the prisoners could sit and be 'penitent'. This is where the word 'penitentiary' comes from.
